Welcome to The Writing Show Slush Pile Workshop!

This podcast series is designed to help you practice capturing readers’ attention. Inspired by literary agent Kristin Nelson’s two-page pitch sessions, Writing Show host Paula B. will play agent and comment on your anonymous submissions on the show.

You know how important it is to hook a prospective agent or publisher in your first couple of pages. If you send your work out before it’s ready, you could squander an important opportunity. Don’t risk it. Try your material out on us first—for free!

For each work, there will be two possible outcomes:

  1. We stop reading before we get to the end. If that happens, we’ll tell you why.
  2. We like it! If we were agents, we’d be asking to see more.

Here are the submissions for Slush Pile Workshop #32:

Nick the 1943 Nickel Saves the World (sort of)  Middle Grade fiction.   Any 1943 nickel could buy a soda pop or a candy bar, but could a nickel stop a bullet, fool a Nazi, or free a prisoner? More important, could a nickel be a friend? Nick was about to find out.

The Computer Project  Science Fiction/Fantasy   Years after his father’s catastrophic disappearance, Jack Moon receives a mysterious package that sends him into a digital dimension called the Computer World, where he discovers bloodthirsty viruses, powered beings called the Guardians, and that he has the ability to control time. Meanwhile, a vengeful parasite wishes to break apart the universe – Earth included – and there’s no way Jack will be ready for what’s to come.

Momentary Moonlight  Urban Fantasy/Horror   A doomed WW2 Polish soldier, murdered along with thousands of his comrades, suddenly finds himself alive in the cold, deep bosom of the Katyn Woods with no memory of how he got there.
