Welcome to The Writing Show Slush Pile Workshop!

This podcast series is designed to help you practice capturing readers’ attention. Inspired by literary agent Kristin Nelson’s two-page pitch sessions, Writing Show host Paula B. will play agent and comment on your anonymous submissions on the show.

You know how important it is to hook a prospective agent or publisher in your first couple of pages. If you send your work out before it’s ready, you could squander an important opportunity. Don’t risk it. Try your material out on us first—for free!

For each work, there will be two possible outcomes:

  1. We stop reading before we get to the end. If that happens, we’ll tell you why.
  2. We like it! If we were agents, we’d be asking to see more.

Here are the submissions for Slush Pile Workshop #10:

The Fasting  Speculative Fiction.“Capitalism is the new religion, corporations are the new deities, and we are the new atheists,” wrote Karl Fleischer in his Humility Manifesto. That was one hundred years ago, after he and nearly all farmers in North America lost control of their farms to The Habosch Corporation. The Fasting is the story of his followers.

The Dra'gan Chronicles  Science Fiction/Fantasy.  The planet Sae'ren is dying and Rakloros Draconus, an immortal reincarnated, is determined to bring an end to the ideology of fear and servitude devised and perpetuated by Pik'ara, the son of the fallen God Tar'kal, the last of the great Dragonai, the ancient ancestors of Dra'gan kind. However, when Pik'ara strikes the first blow in his endgame scenario, Rakloros is forced to flee Sae'ren in order to protect the lives of his family and closest friends. He must now find a way back if he is to complete his mission but the surprising discovery of a new world rich with Ethra, the energy needed to manipulate magik, stacks the odds back in his favor until he learns that this planet called Earth shares a dark secret that will alter the fate of human and Dra'gan alike.
