Welcome to The Writing Show Slush Pile Workshop!

This podcast series is designed to help you practice capturing readers’ attention. Inspired by literary agent Kristin Nelson’s two-page pitch sessions, Writing Show host Paula B. will play agent and comment on your anonymous submissions on the show.

You know how important it is to hook a prospective agent or publisher in your first couple of pages. If you send your work out before it’s ready, you could squander an important opportunity. Don’t risk it. Try your material out on us first—for free!

For each work, there will be two possible outcomes:

  1. We stop reading before we get to the end. If that happens, we’ll tell you why.
  2. We like it! If we were agents, we’d be asking to see more.

When he is approached by powerful political brokers to nominate as the Republican candidate for Governor, it is Nelly who gives him the confidence to stand and win. But when a turn of events leads Chuck all the way to the White House, is it safe to have a leader of the Free World acting out a role, while he hangs onto his sanity by the barest of threads? Some in the press aren’t too sure and neither are the Russians. Maybe the Cubans can help?

Firebound  Young adult fantasy As if being sixteen wasn’t hard enough, Abigail Cooper finds that not only can she control fire but also that she may have been the cause of her mother’s death. Firebound is a coming of age fantasy novel which focuses on romance, action and corruption. Abigail Cooper’s life was changed at the age of fifteen with the unexpected death of her mother. A year later it changes again as she learns that she is not only part of an underground world where people can control the elements but that she is also expected to become part of its royal Elite. Managing her normal life becomes difficult creating problems with her boyfriend and her causing her frustrations to bubble over at school. However the problems in her normal life are nothing compared to her new one. Abigail struggles with the feelings she has for an older guy, the expectations that are placed on her by the royal Elite and more than a few surprises about her mother’s life and death. Just when things are starting to get overwhelming, she discovers an exciting splinter group that offers uncomplicated fun but something is not quite as it seems.
