Please welcome our new guest host, Alanna Klapp, as she discusses writing fiction with author John Derhak.

John Derhak is a historian and writer who divides his time between Maine (to rejuvenate, relax, kick back, and write) and Florida (primarily to avoid black fly season, frigid arctic blasts, and find calm on a tropical beach so he can write).

His general interests include but are not limited to: history of plumbing, brown eyes, the feel of a new pen, the aurora borealis, popular uprisings, baseball, the Red Sox nation, a bottle of good red wine, fine cigars, family, friends, the beach, imagination, astral projection, a stand of pines, moose, amber ale, prime numbers, pooches, a pint of Guinness, aureolas: just how spectacluar they really are, curves, mountains, wilderness, the urban jungle, moe, jazz, bluegrass, the standards, rock 'n roll, the higher stages of the barbarian culture, P.T. Barnum as philosopher-king, grilled asparagus, and onomatopoeia.

Tales from the moe.Republic, his first novel, a Pulitzer Prize contender for fiction, was released in 2007. Chill Your Cockles is his second novel.

Alanna Klapp writes short stories, essays, and poems. She graduated from Kent State University in 2002 with a B.S. in fashion merchandising. In 2005, she won second place in the Lea Leever Oldham essay contest. She is a member of The Lit: Cleveland’s Literary Center, and an online member of the Stow-Munroe Falls Writing Group. She lives near Cleveland, Ohio with her husband and is working on her first novel.
