Sample Author's Book Marketing Questionnaire

This is an author’s book marketing questionnaire I filled out for my book Making Space Happen, which came out in 2002. I was using the publisher’s form.

Author Information

Name: Paula Berinstein
Position and affiliation: I think for purposes of the book I’d just like to say that I’m a writer.
Preferred mailing address: xxxxxxxxxx
Preferred shipping address: Same.

Facts About the Book

Title: Making Space Happen: Private Space Efforts and the People Behind Them
Experts who might be approached to write the foreword: I’m taking care of this. I’ve tried Dennis Tito with no luck. I’ve just sent a letter to author Tom Clancy. Next I will try Buzz Aldrin.

Subject Matter of the Book

What the book is about: Making Space Happen is about the extraordinary people who are working to get all of us into space and the issues involved in doing so.

What about the selection, organization, or treatment should make readers buy the book; what new information and tips are presented:

1) People are focused on space because of Dennis Tito’s historic flight to the International Space Station. They are wondering what will happen next and whether Tito’s flight will lead to a space tourism industry available to them. The book addresses those issues, including when space tourism will happen, what trips will cost, what they’ll be like, and how it will all come about.

2) Few people realize that efforts to develop space exist outside of national space agencies, the military, and the communications industry. The book will break the surprising news that private space efforts are not only happening, but that they’re making inroads.

3) The book focuses on people rather than events and technology. Most of us are interested in other people as much as or more than things and events.

4) Readers will be curious and opinionated about the issues these new ventures will pose. Emotional involvement excites people. There will be debate about whether we should go in the first place, what will happen if we encounter life, whether we should leave environments in space pristine or should use them, who should be able to go, who should be able to own space property, and so on.

5) When space is opened up, life on Earth and our expectations will change. It is possible that many of the dire problems we face will be ameliorated, including pollution, energy, climate change, poverty, and overpopulation. The book examines ways in which space development can make the difference.

6) The book is divided into self-contained chapters so that a reader can simply pick it up and browse rather than having to read it all the way through.

7) Some of the interviewees have controversial things to say. Whether or not readers agree, they will probably have strong reactions, which means they’ll become emotionally involved.

Main Benefit of the Book

We can go with one of several options here. Either:

The book introduces a subject that will affect all of us but that’s little known or understood
The book will involve the reader in stimulating and controversial ideas
The book introduces fascinating people
The book makes the ideas surrounding space travel and development easy to understand
The book shows how richly rewarding going into space will be
The book explores how going into space will change our lives forever
The book shows that there’s a lot more to space than NASA

Physical Features of Special Interest

Illustrations, including a signature of color pictures. In addition to photos of the visionaries, there will be pictures of space hotels and vehicles plus a diagram showing what a well-developed space infrastructure will look like.

Catalog or Back Cover Copy

While most Americans equate space exploration with NASA, its multimillion-dollar taxpayer-funded programs, and its small corps of astronauts, a handful know that innovative, dedicated individuals and companies are poised to spark a space revolution. As Dennis Tito’s recent expensive but perhaps trend-setting visit to the International Space Station has shown, private citizens will be able to tour near space. Once that happens, Mars and the Moon could be opened to permanent human presence.

Recognizing the enormous potential demand for affordable space tourism and other commercial activity, entrepreneurs, scientists, and visionaries have been quietly planning a coup: designing space hotels and the vehicles to take us there, arguing about who should own what in space, researching how our bodies will react to being in space for long periods, and trying to lower the cost of getting there. The prospect of opening space to humans raises new questions relating to property rights, environmental preservation, safety, law enforcement, social responsibility, and government participation. This human venture will be more closely watched and will affect us more profoundly than has terrestrial development of any sort. Read about how these fascinating people will change our lives forever.

Newsworthy angles for a press release

What does the recent flight of businessman Dennis Tito mean for a mass space tourism industry?
What will have to happen before the rest of us can go into space like Dennis Tito?
You can go into space today: zero gravity and edge-of-space flights are here, and soon perhaps spacediving as well

The Market for the Book

Primary Market: General public interested in space
Audience: Mostly men, some women and kids. The kinds of people who attend the JPL open house, etc. Some amateur astronomers, science fiction fans, aviation enthusiasts.
Major benefit: Lets them know there’s a chance they personally will be able to go into space.

Secondary Markets:

Space community.
Audience: Activists (advocates) and participants, from Mars Society and National Space Society members to employees of space startups to space medicine researchers to NASA employees.
Major benefit: Curiosity to see who’s saying what about them and how I’m presenting the information to the public.
Chapters: All.

General public.
Audience: Intellectually curious people.
Major benefit: Lets them know that something new and major is about to occur. Raises interesting thorny issues.
Chapters: All, but especially chapters on ethics and property rights.

General public.
Audience: Libertarians and Republicans.
Major benefit: Makes them feel good about the rise of private enterprise in a new area.
Chapters: All, but especially chapters on Jim Benson, Denise Norris, Rick Tumlinson, property rights.

Decision makers and those who would influence them.
Audience: Politicians, legislators, public officials, policy wonks, political and environmental activists, those working on economic development.
Major benefit: Brings potential areas of conflict to light. Provides fodder for decisions, resource allocation, PR efforts, etc.
Chapters: All.

Sales & Distribution

Aspects of the book that are strongest for broad consumer use: chapters on space tourism, what it’s like to live in space, and physiological effects of space on the body.

Current trends that lead me to think the book should have broad consumer appeal: Dennis Tito’s flight, the fact that the Russians are the ones who are taking tourists up rather than the Americans, NASA’s image problems due to mistakes and negative reaction to Tito

Sections of bookstore: Science, space, astronomy, aviation, current events. In a real stretch, business.

Bookstores that might want me to sign books: Borders, Barnes & Noble, Bookstar in Woodland Hills, Vroman’s in Pasadena. There are a couple of technical bookstores like Op Amp in Hollywood and Technical Bookstore in Westwood (or used to be in Westwood), but I don’t know if they do signings.

Textbook market: Not applicable.

Additional ways to market my book:

Because there’s a lot of discussion of free enterprise in the book, Libertarian and economically conservative organizations should be interested. Think tanks such as the Cato Institute, American Enterprise Institute, etc. may be leads.
I’d also send review copies to CNN (Miles O’Brien is science reporter—you used to be able to post a chapter on cnn.com/books, though I don’t know if you still can), The Discovery Channel, Nova, C/Net, National Public Radio, the Lehrer Newshour on PBS, Scientific American Frontiers.
Also, there may be some interest from travel agents, cruise lines, and hotel chains.
Also space camps.
Airshows that attract space/aviation enthusiasts.

Competing Books

Joel Brenner is working on a book that’s a lot like mine. I’ve met her a couple of times. Her book isn’t out yet. As far as I know, it isn’t organized around profiles of people.

I’m not sure that any of the books I know about exactly competes with mine.
